Go Subtle by Going Smaller: The Mini Facelift

The traditional facelift is no longer one of the most sought after cosmetic procedures, but this was not always the case. Thanks to people having a greater awareness of environmental risk factors caused by over-exposure to the sun and the rise of sunscreen use, the average person has less skin damage, reducing the need for facelifts.

Today, the mini facelift surgery is the most common type of facelift surgery. The average 40-year old today has healthier skin than the average 40-year old of 20 years ago, making this procedure more ideal for patients interested in something less invasive than the traditional facelift.

Riverview Facial Plastic Surgery in Saint Paul, Minnesota is led by Dr. Daniel Schneider; a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon who focuses on facial rejuvenation through a variety of techniques.

What is a Mini Facelift?

A Mini Facelift also called the Weekend Facelift, addresses wrinkles and sagging skin on the lower third of the face and restores definition to the chin. Dr. Schneider can tailor a Mini Facelift procedure to give you a youthful, more refreshed appearance that accentuates your natural beauty and boosts your confidence.

How Does a Mini Facelift Compare to a Traditional Face Lift?

Mini facelift surgery can provide a wealth of physical and emotional benefits:

• Less Invasive – The surgery is performed with an endoscope that inserts a tiny fiber optic lens through small incisions that are inconspicuously made, excess fat in removed and muscles are reshaped.

• Local Anesthesia – A Mini Facelift can be done using local anesthesia, allowing the patient to remain conscious throughout the procedure without feeling pain. As such, patients do not have to experience the groggy disorientation and risks that follow general anesthesia.

• Less costly – Because there is no IV sedation involved, the procedure costs less than a traditional facelift.

• Shorter Procedure Time – Usually takes one to two hours and you can go home the same day.

• Minimal Side Effects – A Mini Facelift results in less swelling, bruising, and tenderness than a more extensive and traditional facelift surgery.

• Minimal Scarring – Incisions are easily concealed within your natural facial contours and hairline.

How Are the Procedures Different?

The Mini Lift Procedure:

• Immediately before the procedure, Dr. Schneider will administer local anesthesia for comfort. During this time, you will be awake and conscious, which means the jaw can remain in its natural position for accurate treatment.

• During your Mini Facelift surgery, Dr. Schneider will locate incisions in front of your ears that extend from the bottom of your earlobe to your hairline, behind your ear. The length and pattern of your incisions depend on your desired outcome.

• Next, Dr. Schneider’s technique reduces sagging skin and jowls, as well as the appearance of wrinkles.

• Once the alteration of the skin reaches a position that accentuates your natural bone structure and facial contours, they are sutured into place, and excess tissue is trimmed away.

Traditional Facelift:

• The first step is administering IV sedation and general anesthesia. You are asleep for the duration of the procedure.

• Traditional facelift incision often begins in the hairline at the temples, continues around the ear and ends in the lower scalp.

• Fat may be sculpted or redistributed from the face, jowls and neck, and underlying tissue is repositioned, commonly the deeper layers of the face and the muscles are also lifted.

• Skin is re-draped over the uplifted contours, and excess skin is trimmed away.

• A second incision under the chin may be necessary to further improve an aging neck. Sutures or skin adhesives close the incisions.

When is it Appropriate to Get a Mini Facelift?

The difference between a Mini or a Traditional Facelift mainly has to do with the condition of the neck. Usually, someone in their 40’s may well just have a slight sagging of their jowls. Their neck may still be in good tight condition. A Mini Lift would then be advisable because it tightens the face from just above the ear to about the top inch or so of your neck.

Who is a Good Candidate?

The Mini Facelift is particularly valuable for younger patients in their forties, fifties and those who would like secondary facelifts. It can be combined with liposuction in the neck area to give a remarkable overall improvement.

Neck Lift or Neck Liposuction?

The neck is one of the first places where we show our age. As we age, excess fat can collect in various areas around the body and be can be very unsightly around the face and neck. These extra pockets of fat can cause double chins, a “turkey wattle,” vertica banding and horizontal creases – leading to an overall poor looking facial structure.

Facial flaws and signs of premature aging camouflage the spirit within you. When your appearance doesn’t reflect your true beauty, it can dampen your self-confidence and even influence the way others relate to you.

If you would like a tighter neck and jaw line, neck lift surgery or neck liposuction may be the cosmetic procedure that is right for you. Dr. Daniel Schneider at Riverview Facial Plastic Surgery is a board-certified specialist in St. Paul, who attracts patients throughout the state of Minnesota. If you are interested in a cosmetic procedure to enhance your neck, find out which of the two may be right for you.

What is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that improves visible signs of aging in the jawline and neck, such as:
• Excess fat and skin relaxation in the lower face that creates jowls
• Excess fatty deposits under the chin
• Loose neck skin
• Muscle banding in the neck, which created abnormal contours

The procedure can include:
• Removing excess skin.
• Removing or altering neck muscles.
• Liposuction to remove excess fat.
• Botox injections to address problems with fullness.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Neck Lift?

In general, good candidates for a neck lift include:
• Healthy individuals who do not have medical conditions that impair healing.
• Non-smokers.
• Individuals with a turkey wattle that makes you look much older than your age.
• If you have lost the distinct jawline of your youth and want to restore it.
• Individuals with excess skin and wrinkles on the neck.

Advantages of Neck Lift

• Can significantly improve your neck and jawline
• Can be done as a stand-alone procedure if other facial surgery is not needed or desired
• Can provide you with a more youthful profile taking years and pounds off your appearance.

Disadvantages of Neck Lift

• Your neck may feel tight for months after surgery
• May make your other facial aging more noticeable if only the neck has been treated
• Recovery time requires you take time off work and limit strenuous activity for several weeks.

What is Neck Liposuction?

Neck liposuction is a surgical treatment that involves the removal of fatty deposits within the facial and neck regions to provide a rejuvenated appearance. Neck liposuction can be performed using local anesthesia.

Who is a Good Candidate for Neck Liposuction?

In general, good candidates for a neck liposuction include:
• Healthy individuals who do not have medical conditions that impair healing.
• Non-smokers.
• Individuals wanting to get rid of their double chin and fat deposits in the neck.
• Individuals who want to correct their lack of jaw definition.

Advantages of Neck Lipo

• The procedure can typically be done within an hour.
• Removes unwanted fat in cheeks, under the chin and on the neck.
• Usually involves fewer complications and fewer scars than neck lift.
• Can be performed without general anesthesia.
• Has a more rapid recovery.
• Can be combined with other enhancement procedures.

Disadvantages of Neck Lipo

• This procedure does not tighten excess skin.
• Does not alter or remove muscles for tightening.
• Typical patients are in their 20s through early 50s, as younger patients have good skin elasticity which is necessary for the skin to contract smoothly.

Your Initial Consultation Appointment

During your initial consultation, you will have the opportunity to discuss your cosmetic goals. Dr. Schneider will evaluate you as a candidate for a neck lift or neck liposuction and will clarify what each procedure can do for you. How Long Will Results Last?

Under normal circumstances, the results of your neck lift surgery will be long-lasting.

Limitations and Risk

Fortunately, significant complications from a neck lift and neck liposuction are infrequent. Your specific risks will be discussed during your consultation.

All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Some of the potential complications of all surgeries are:
