What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is an exfoliation treatment that removes outer layers of skin, leaving softer, more youthful skin behind. There are many different formulations of chemical peels, allowing this treatment to be customized to the severity and specificity of each patient’s needs. Chemical peels are an effective, non-surgical way to rejuvenate the skin and address a host of skin concerns in a single treatment session.

There are three basic types of chemical peels:

  • One: Light peels that offer subtle results over time.
  • Two: Medium peels provide noticeable results, with a visible reduction of some skin concerns.
  • Three: Deep peels offer dramatic results that are long-lasting but require a longer recovery time.

In addition to general skin rejuvenation, chemical peels can be used to address the following skin concerns and conditions:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun damage
  • Uneven skin texture and tone
  • Shallow scarring from acne and chicken pox
  • Age spots and freckles
  • Precancerous lesions and skin growths

How does a chemical peel work?

Chemical peels are performed on an outpatient basis at the Riverview Facial Plastic Surgery office. The chemical peel solution may be applied to specific areas requiring treatment, or to the entire face for a full exfoliating effect. Once the chemical peel solution is applied, it is left on the skin for a prescribed period of time, before it is neutralized and removed.

What is recovery from a chemical peel like?

Recovery from a chemical peel will depend greatly on the depth of the solution used. Light and medium peels usually require no special skin care products after and patients are able to return to regular activities immediately following treatment. Deep peels typically involve some specific aftercare and a recovery period of one to two weeks or longer.

What can I expect from my chemical peel results?

Light chemical peels offer subtle results that are temporary. Peels are usually repeated on a regular basis to maintain and enhance results. Medium peels will offer more noticeable results, but will also need to be repeated periodically to maintain them. Deep peels offer the most dramatic, long-lasting results, with some patients only requiring a chemical peel every ten years or so.
