Hi! I’m here to give an update on Clean Start and my pageant preparations. And since the weather is finally heating up (YAY!) and beach time is right around the corner now is a great time to talk about popular ways to help you reduce stubborn body fat!

The past two weeks I have been in the maintenance phase of Clean Start. This phase started off more challenging than being in an extremely rigid eating pattern. I introduced more carbs into my diet and noticed it took about two weeks to find the right balance of macros (proteins, fats and carbs) to maintain my current body fat percentage and weight. I also had a couple of meals where I went off of clean eating. When not eating clean I noticed my skin breaking out. I also experienced an increase in sinus issues and had less energy. This is a great reminder of why it is so important to eliminate sugar from my diet. My body feels better and I am in the right mindset when eating clean. I have six weeks left before taking the stage to compete for the title of Mrs. Minnesota America and I need to be focused and in the game!

My focus for the next six weeks is to tighten up my diet again and start back up with a Clean Start carb cycle. I will eat the foods listed in my first blog and go back to high, low and no carb days. I am also excited to get outside for high intensity workouts! My favorite outdoor workout is running the steep staircase and hills in Stillwater! This creates the ultimate burn!

I have great results by eating clean and getting regular exercise. If you eat clean, exercise regularly and still struggle with stubborn fat in certain areas there are a couple non-invasive procedures that may be great options for you.


CoolSculpting, also called cryolipolysis, is a non-invasive FDA approved medical procedure that freezes and kills fat. CoolSculpting is not for weight loss. It is a treatment to reduce fat once a patient is at or close to their ideal body weight. What is great about this treatment is that it is customized to each patient’s body since we all store fat in different areas. Commonly treated areas include: under the chin/below the jaw line, abdomen, flanks, outer thighs, inner thighs, bra fat, upper arm and banana roll (that lovely area under the glutes).

Allergan notes patients can expect up to a 20-25 percent reduction in fat after each CoolSculpting treatment. It takes about 30-45 days on average to see results, although, for some it may take up to 90 days to see the full effect.

Each treatment takes 30-60 minutes to complete, depending on the area being treated. It is possible for a patient to have multiple areas treated at once. A patient will typically need 4 treatments in each area to see desired results. Since CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure there is no down time and a patient can typically return to their normal activities immediately following treatment.


Exilis is another procedure offered at Riverview Facial Plastic Surgery. Exilis is a non-invasive fat loss and skin tightening treatment that can be used in combination with CoolSculpting. Exilis is also a good adjunct therapy after some facial surgeries and can be used to treat mild fine lines and wrinkles. For optimal results 4-6 sessions are generally needed.

Hi! I’m back for more Clean Start and weight loss talk! I have learned so much throughout the past six weeks and have regained skills to live my healthiest life. By manipulating carbohydrate and caloric intake, I have now entered into a state of ketosis.  I no longer crave sugar and my body performs at an optimal level using protein as its fuel source. I have better mental focus and clarity, improved sleep and experience fewer headaches! I find my energy levels are consistent throughout the day, never hitting that mid-afternoon wall. What I have also enjoyed throughout this process is having so much endurance in my weight training and cardio workouts! As my body fat and weight have decreased, I have been able to maintain my strength and feel energized while exercising. A total win!

Clean Start Maintenance Phase

I have successfully hit my target body fat and weight goals! Over the course of 6 weeks I have reduced my body fat by 5 percent and created a new baseline weight by resetting my metabolism. I am now in the maintenance phase of Clean Start! I am excited to implement what I have learned in the past six weeks into this phase of my diet. Sometimes transitioning from a rigid diet to a lifestyle diet can be difficult. Listed below are tips and strategies I have found most effective throughout my weight loss journey and that I will continue to follow to keep my current state.

Food journal

Keeping track of all nutrition consumed is a must. Journaling your food intake can show patterns to eating and help identify where areas of improvement need to be made. Journaling emotions along with nutrition is also helpful to show any correlation between nutrition and emotional state.

Meal Prep

Prepare meals for 3-4 days and store in Tupperware containers with calories and macros (fat, protein, carbs) labeled.  This takes out the guess work and will save time and money.

Daily Weight Check

Weighing yourself daily is an effective weight loss tool. This can create self-awareness and lead to better weight control behaviors. By monitoring body weight closely, modifications to diet can be made accordingly.

Consume Caffeine

Iced coffee is my favorite treat. A little jolt of caffeine can help push through a craving and is great before a workout. Caffeine may also help boost your metabolic rate and burn more fat.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water (around 60-70 oz. per day) can help with satiety and prevent dehydration.

Sleep 7-8 Hours

The body repairs, both physically and mentally, when at rest. Getting enough rest will also keep your cortisol levels in check which helps to regulate metabolism.

Dietary Supplements

A health/nutrition specialist can determine what supplements your body needs. I take Magnesium L-Threonate, Vitamin C, Vitamin D3, CLA, Omega 3 Fish Oil and Collagen Protein Hydrolysate. I take Magnesium L-Threonate because it is the only magnesium that passes through the blood brain barrier. This helps to regulate anxious tendencies and balance cortisol.

Fasted Cardio

Perform cardiovascular exercise in a fasted state 1 or 2 times per week. Fasted cardio is a controversial issue in the fitness industry. I have always performed fasted cardio when prepping for fitness competitions and have seen great results. I will continue to do this to give me an edge.

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

Incorporating HIIT into your workout routine has many benefits. They include: A boost in metabolism, higher calorie burn, higher EPOC (Excess post-exercise oxygen consumption), preserves muscle while burning more fat and can be performed anywhere without equipment.

Committed Mind Set

Being committed to your maintenance phase is just as important as during a weight loss phase! Be passionate about your health and continue on with the same great habits you worked so hard to form!

I am amazed at how fast my body adapted with The Clean Start Weight Loss Program and how quickly I reached my target goal! This is the fastest my body has ever leaned up. I am committed to stay on track to maintain my current fitness level. I want to make sure to bring my best, both mentally and physically, to the stage when I compete for Mrs. Minnesota America this June! Hi! I am 2 weeks into my Mrs. Minnesota America prep and am loving the journey so far! This process is pushing me out of my comfort zone and inspiring me to try new things!

First 2 Weeks with Clean Start Weight Loss

My Clean Start carb cycling diet is off to a great start!  I stick rigidly to the diet plan and my body adjusts to fewer carbs and reduced calories. The first week is the most challenging as my body adapts. No carb days are definitely the hardest. While I do not go off the diet, there are moments I feel like giving into my cravings. So, what helps the most with cravings and moments of weakness…

Flip The Switch

The switch is flipped in my mind and I know I am 100% committed to my goal! I am ALL IN! This is the most important determinant of success! I have a clear vision of my end goal and a strong belief that it WILL happen. I find it helpful to put inspiring quotes in places I will see every day and I try to surround myself with positive people that believe in me.


Know your purpose! My Platform as Mrs. Woodbury is to inspire people to live a healthy life, to eat clean foods and to get plenty of exercise! Seventy percent of people are overweight or obese, and I want to help change that. This is what attracts me to the Clean Start Weight Loss Program. I want to eliminate all sugars, not only for aesthetic purposes, but also to live a healthier life. I want to teach my son how to eat healthily and respect his body with proper nutrition and exercise. This purpose drives me!!


Journal what you eat. I keep a very detailed food journal which helps discover where I need to make changes if I am not seeing results. Here is the journal I use and a photo of a no carb day, high carb day, and a low carb day during weeks one and two. I also track water intake. My calorie range has been between 1,250-1,800- depending on the day.


Exercise is key to getting the results I need!  The past two weeks I make sure to not miss any workouts. I do cardio 5-6 day’s/week for 30-60 minutes per session and lift weights 5 days/week. I split my weight lifting days into 3 groups:

  • Lower Body (Quads, Hamstrings, Glutes)
  • Back & Biceps
  • Shoulders, Chest & Triceps
  • Abs are incorporated every workout. When lifting, the abdominals should always be activated!

When I feel depleted it can be hard to find the motivation to make it through a workout. I listen to music that pumps me up and keeps me going.  I never felt more depleted than when I was giving birth to Ethan, if Eye of the Tiger can get me through that, it can certainly get me through to the end of a workout! That is one of my go-to songs.

My 2 Week Results with Clean Start

It is so exciting seeing results and knowing my hard work is paying off! My starting body fat percentage was 18.7% and it is now at 15.4%. That is a 3.3% body fat loss in 2 weeks!! I have competed in figure competitions in the past and am currently preparing to compete in the Mrs. MN America Pageant in June 2019! As I prepare for my pageant I will be following a carb cycling diet and eliminating all sugars to get my body healthy and pageant ready! What is Carb Cycling?

Carb cycling is an eating plan that manipulates caloric intake by alternating high-carb, low-carb, and no carb days. There are many variations to this approach. You can adjust your carb intake to fit your specific needs depending on what your goals are. My goal is to reduce body fat. I am currently at 18.7%. I will start with a carb cycle of:

  • High carb
  • Low carb
  • No carb
  • Repeat

My biggest workout days (HIIT and lower body weight training) will be on high carb days and fasted steady state cardio will be on my no carb days. This way my body is getting the nutrition it needs, when it needs it most!

What Foods & Drinks Can You Consume on this Diet?

All clean, one ingredient foods. No sugar and no dairy. Here is a list of foods and beverages that are in my typical diet and I stick to mostly organic:

Chicken breast, extra lean turkey burger, eggs, egg whites, tilapia, asparagus, spinach, bell peppers, onions, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, grapefruit, rolled oats, brown rice, puffed rice, puffed kamut, sweet potato, peanut butter (no sugar added), avocado, almonds, walnuts, olive oil, egg white protein powder.

Beverages: Coffee (I love iced coffee and drink lots of it), unsweetened tea, unsweetened almond milk and of course, lots and lots of water.  For a sweetener, I use stevia.

I’m off to my first week of carb cycling. The first 2 weeks are usually the hardest as my body adapts to fewer carbs! Here I go……!!
